Heavenly Mountain Ski Resort is known for its stunning lake views and massive terrain that spans both California and Nevada. But for beginners—especially families—it can be a bit tricky to navigate. Your entire ski day can depend on where you park, so we’re breaking it down by location to help you find the best beginner runs at Heavenly, no matter where you start. Here’s your go-to guide for planning a family-friendly ski day based on where you park.
Nevada Side – Boulder Parking Lot
If you’re parking on the Nevada side, the Boulder Lodge is your launch point into beginner territory. This area is a favorite among families because it’s a little quieter and more beginner-focused.
Top Beginner Runs:
Boulder Bowl – A wide-open green that’s ideal for building confidence.
Boulder Carpet – Great for first-timers learning how to stop and turn.
Family Tip: This area is also home to ski school and rentals, making it super convenient for a smooth start to your day.
California Side – Parking Garage + Gondola Access
If you’re parking in the Heavenly Village parking garage, you’ll access the mountain via the Heavenly Gondola. The gondola drops you off at the top near Tamarack Lodge, where you’ll find several beginner-friendly runs serviced by the Big Easy Lift.
Top Beginner Runs:
Big Easy – A gentle, wide trail perfect for beginners.
Easy Street – Smooth and scenic, great for practicing turns.
Black Bear Hollow – A mellow tree-lined run that adds variety without the challenge.
Family Tip: Grab a snack or warm up at Tamarack Lodge between laps. It's a nice basecamp for families.
California Side – California Lodge Parking Lot + Aerial Tram
Park at the California Lodge lot and you can take the Aerial Tram up to access the Patsy’s and Groove lifts as well as enjoy the Lakeview Lodge.
Top Beginner Runs:
Patsy’s – One of the most popular greens for beginners. Wide, mellow, and always well-groomed.
Groove Park – A great spot for beginner progression with a little freestyle flavor.
Bonus: Steins Umbrella Bar is right nearby—perfect for a family rest stop or sunny snack break!
California Lodge Lot – First Ride Lift Option
If you’re sticking closer to the base, the First Ride lift is another great way to start the day.
Top Beginner Runs:
Poma Trail – A beginner-friendly route to ease into the day.
Enchanted Forest – A fun, short green run with a magical vibe—great for kids!
Family Tip: This area is low-key and ideal for a shorter ski session or late start.
Final Thoughts: Plan for a Smooth Day
Heavenly is a large, diverse mountain, and it’s not always intuitive for beginners. But with the right parking plan, you can unlock some of the best beginner terrain in Tahoe. Choose your access point based on your family's needs—whether that’s Nevada’s peaceful vibe, gondola views, or California’s variety of lifts—and you’ll be gliding confidently in no time.
