If you’re heading to the beautiful Lake Tahoe area to learn to ski or snowboard, Soda Springs Ski Resort, located in Norden, California, is a resort you should seriously consider.
Soda Springs is the perfect beginner-oriented resort; you can park and walk straight to the lifts with no gondolas, shuttles, or complicated base areas.
Lift tickets are very affordable, making it very approachable for individuals or families that are looking to ski or snowboard without breaking the bank.
The resort has two lifts:
Lions Head: is a fixed-grip double that serves the bunny hill and the fun slope,
Crystal Bowl: is a fixed-grip quad that serves all of the intermediate and advanced terrain, along with most of the beginner terrain.
Soda Springs also has a Planet Kids zone, so if you’re not into skiing, you can still enjoy snow attractions and tubing.
If you’re planning to stay overnight, you’ll find Airbnbs near the resort, as well as cozy rentals scattered throughout Norden and Kingvale; perfect for groups, families, or anyone looking to wake up and ski without the hassle of commuting. Staying nearby gives you easy access to the lifts and lets you make the most of every day on the mountain. Soda Springs is truly a blast for everyone.
Today, I’m breaking down my Top 3 Trails at Soda Springs to help you build confidence, avoid stress, and have fun on the mountain. I’m ranking each run using four key factors:
1. Terrain: how beginner-friendly the slope is
2. Lapability: how easy it is to repeat laps, including lift speed and crowds
3. Ease of Access: how easy it is to reach the run
4. Distance to a Lodge: breaks are essential
Alright, let’s jump in, starting with Number 3 and building up to the best run at the resort.
#3: Sunshine
Sunshine is great if you’re just learning how to ski. It’s the perfect beginner slope with a very mellow pitch from top to bottom, making it easy to learn and build confidence.
The run is served by the Lions Head double chair. The slow speed makes loading and unloading much easier and gives your legs time to rest. The lift is located right at the base, so accessing the lodge and taking breaks is super easy.
#2: Tree Trail
Tree Trail is a really fun and unique trail that goes from the top of the Lions Head lift down to the middle of Sunshine. The run is lined with trees, giving you the feel of glade skiing, but on a mellow, groomed slope.
Tree Trail is also served by the Lions Head chair. Since the trail and lift are both at the base area, taking a break is very convenient.
#1 : Race Course to Scooter
The best trail at Soda Springs is Race Course to Scooter. This trail combo gives you a bit of steep challenge followed by a chill runout, making it the perfect mix to help you level up your skills. Race Course is rated a black, but if you are an experienced intermediate you should feel comfortable on Race Course.
You’ll get a combination of trees, turns, and steeper terrain, followed by an easier finish. The trail is served by the Crystal Bowl lift, which is a slow fixed-grip quad. The slower speed helps with loading and unloading, though you can expect a little rocking when loading.
There is also a mid-station on the lift, so if you don’t want to ski the entire trail top to bottom, you don’t have to.
