If you’re heading to the beautiful Lake Tahoe area to ski or snowboard, Diamond Peak is a resort you should seriously consider. With stunning views of Lake Tahoe and affordable lift ticket prices, Diamond Peak is one of my local favorites.

Today, I’m breaking down my Top 3 Beginner Runs at Diamond Peak to help you gain confidence, avoid stress, and have fun on the mountain.

I’m ranking each run using four key factors:

1) Terrain: how beginner-friendly the slope is
2) Lapability: how easy it is to repeat laps, including lift speed and crowd levels
3) Ease of Access: how easy it is to reach the run
4) Distance to a Lodge: breaks are essential

Alright, let’s jump in, starting with Number 3 and building up to my favorite beginner run on the mountain.

#3: Schoolyard

Schoolyard is great if you’re a first-timer looking to learn skiing. It’s got just enough slope to move you down the trail; perfect for kids or anyone wanting a short, relaxed green run. The lift is a slow, fixed-grip lift, which makes unloading easier.

The main base lodge is at the top of the lift, which makes taking breaks a breeze. The run is always groomed, though it can get a little choppy by the end of the day.

If you’re lucky you can score a parking spot directly in front of the trail. Otherwise, you do need to take the shuttle or walk to reach the main base lodge. But once you get off the shuttle, you can just click in and ski since the lodge sits right at the top of the run.

#2: Lodgepole

Lodgepole is slightly steeper than Schoolyard, making it perfect once you’ve mastered Schoolyard and are ready for a longer, slightly more challenging run. The run is always groomed, though it can get busier than Schoolyard since it’s the main route from the Crystal Express lift. And it has multiple trails feeding into it.

This actually helps you build awareness, which is a key skill in skiing. The Lodgepole quad is a slow, fixed-grip lift, making loading and unloading stress-free. The lodge is right at the bottom of the run, so you can ski down and enjoy a nice break.

Lines may form on weekends or peak periods, but after lunch or on weekdays; the run is usually quiet. To reach Lodgepole, you’ll need to either walk or take the shuttle to the main lodge and then ride the lift up.

#1: Freeway

Freeway is great because it’s the perfect amount of pitch for a beginner to progress by the end of the day, it’s a nice sidewinder down the mountain. It gets a little steeper at the bottom, but it’s nothing to worry about.

This run is perfect for skiers looking to progress from Lodgepole to the next level. It ends right at the bottom of Crystal Express, so you can keep building your skills. The Red Fox lift is a slow, fixed-grip lift, making loading and unloading easy. You can also take the Lakeview quad, but it drops you on a blue run — so take Red Fox if you want the pure green experience.

The main lodge is at the bottom of Lodgepole, so you’ll need to ride the Lodgepole quad back up to reach Red Fox again. Freeway is always groomed and is one of the less busy runs on the mountain. It can get crowded in the mornings and around noon as people head back to the base, but otherwise it stays in great condition.

And that’s my breakdown of the Top 3 Beginner Runs at Diamond Peak; from mellow greens to confidence-building progression terrain.

Thanks for tuning in! And I’ll see you out on the slopes!
