Whether you're brand new to skiing or just want some mellow laps to build confidence, Northstar has some of the best beginner terrain in Tahoe. Here are our top five favorite runs for beginners:

1. Skid Trail

Skid Trail is a fantastic beginner run thanks to its perfect balance—it's mellow without being too flat, and it has just enough pitch to help new skiers gain confidence. One of the best parts? It's served by a high-speed chairlift, so you don’t have to deal with slow fixed-grip lifts. While fixed grips have their place, they’re not ideal when you want to keep lapping your favorite run efficiently.

2. Lumberjack

Lumberjack is even flatter than Skid Trail, making it a perfect choice for true first-timers. It can get a bit crowded during peak times and weekends, but if you’re patient, it’s one of the best mellow runs on the mountain. It's long and forgiving, with optional detours like The Gulch for fewer crowds or a continuation to Main Street and  Vista Express. If you’re not ready to try a new lift yet, loop back to Arrow Express and ride it again!

3. Lower Main Street

Lower Main Street is a go-to for beginners looking to take the next step. Its long, flowing layout features a gentle slope that’s great for learning without feeling overwhelmed. Plus, there are fun little side hits if you're ready to play a bit more with your skiing. It’s a solid confidence booster that’s still very accessible for newer skiers.

4. Village Run

Village Run is a first-timer’s paradise with a little bit of everything—gentle flats, mild steeps, and even a cool bridge crossing! Not many Tahoe resorts can say that. The only downside is that you'll need to take off your skis and ride the Big Springs Gondola up to access it. Even if the Village Express is open, it leads to blue runs, which might be too much for beginners. Still, Village Run stays uncrowded most of the day, making it a great option for consistent snow and stress-free laps.

5. Lower Lion’s Way

Lower Lion’s Way is short, mellow, and perfect for those just getting their ski legs. It has a gentle pitch that keeps you moving without feeling too fast. The lift here is slow, which can actually be a good thing—it’s less intimidating, and the lifties are happy to slow down the lift if you need. The only downside? It tends to stop often, which makes it harder to lap quickly. And like other beginner zones, it can get a bit crowded.
